Making decisions to withhold or stop medical treatment for a loved one is hard to imagine, let alone prepare for, no matter one's age. However, following the known wishes of our loved ones can be comforting and can make a stressful time easier to come through.

When conversations about what "good quality of life" means and what medical treatments one would, or would not want have already taken place, then family members, loved ones and health care professionals are better able to make decisions if ever called upon to do so.

Making an advance care plan is a unique gift for your loved ones and your health care providers. If ever called upon to speak on your behalf they will know what to do and what to say as you will have made your wishes clear. Your voice will be heard through your advance care plan.

The Comox Valley Hospice Society provides assistance to those wishing to go through the process of preparing an advance care plan and clarifying what your wishes are.

The following workshops are available to the public:

  • Part I - ' Introduction to Advance Care Planning ' - an initial 2-hour workshop providing an introduction to having the conversation about advance care planning and identifying options and next steps in moving forward.
  • Part II - ' Developing Your Own Advance Care Plan ' - For those who have previously attended a Part I - Introduction to Advance Care Planning Workshop. The Part II -  1 1/2 - 2 hour workshop focuses on 'Developing Your Own Advance Care Plan'. Important issues to consider will be reviewed and tips to using the 'My Voice Guide' will be provided.

Individual support in preparing one's own advance care plan is also available upon request

Please contact the Comox Valley Hospice Society at 250-339-5533 if you, your family, community group or health care practice wishes information and/or assistance with advance care planning,
